Imagine walking into an auto dealership and with the push of a button, printing off the car of your dreams and driving it home the next day. Sounds crazy, but that could become a reality next year as the world’s first and only 3D printed car debuts this week in Chicago. “There are no tools. There’s no dye. There’s no pattern. Those things cost 10’s of millions of dollars. It’s being free casted, printed out of a machine. No materials wasted. It’s just what you get,” said Jay Rogers, Founder/CEO of Local Motors. The world’s first automobile whose entire structure was created using direct digital manufacturing is called Strati. The vehicle is being printed, assembled and driven at Chicago’s International Manufacturing Technology Show.
